Unit 18. Page 310. Exercise 6. Listening.

3
00:00:12,420 --> 00:00:17,480
Good afternoon. This is the latest news from the World Broadcasting Network.

4
00:00:18,220 --> 00:00:21,160
The ceasefire has been broken in Franconia.

5
00:00:22,200 --> 00:00:25,780
Asked whether he would attend next week's peace conference in Geneva,

6
00:00:25,780 --> 00:00:29,380
rebel leader Amalde declined to commit himself.

7
00:00:30,000 --> 00:00:36,780
Saying that the success of the conference depended on the good faith actions of Mr. Tintor, the country's president.

8
00:00:37,680 --> 00:00:40,780
Having refused to release any rebel prisoners of war,

9
00:00:41,340 --> 00:00:46,940
Mr. Tintor has shown that he does not really want peace, according to Mr. Amalde.

10
00:00:47,840 --> 00:00:54,240
Interviewed about Mr. Amalde's comments, an aide to President Tintor, speaking off the record,

11
00:00:54,240 --> 00:00:58,560
said he did not expect the conference to take place as scheduled.

12
00:01:00,000 --> 00:01:06,960
Meanwhile, researchers from the Global Health Foundation announced plans to test a new vaccine for AIDS.

13
00:01:07,720 --> 00:01:10,400
Acknowledging that the current vaccine is ineffective,

14
00:01:11,080 --> 00:01:16,000
the researchers claim that their new vaccine is a marked improvement on the existing one.

15
00:01:16,640 --> 00:01:18,860
They believe that it holds great promise.

16
00:01:20,260 --> 00:01:23,680
A new nation comes into existence at midnight tonight.

17
00:01:23,920 --> 00:01:26,940
To be known as the Central Asian Republic,

18
00:01:27,540 --> 00:01:29,680
the new nation has been carved out of the Easter eggs,

19
00:01:29,680 --> 00:01:31,280
the eastern portion of Spartania.

20
00:01:32,060 --> 00:01:33,960
After declaring the nation's independence,

21
00:01:33,960 --> 00:01:40,340
one of the new government's first actions was to request billions of dollars in foreign aid.

22
00:01:41,400 --> 00:01:44,920
Finally, here is today's human interest story.

23
00:01:45,760 --> 00:01:47,100
In St. Louis, Missouri,

24
00:01:47,700 --> 00:01:55,160
16-year-old Sam Michaels was saved from drowning in a swimming pool by 12-year-old Carrie Hutchinson.

25
00:01:56,040 --> 00:01:57,380
Being unable to swim,

26
00:01:57,980 --> 00:01:59,660
Michaels had almost given up on his life.

27
00:01:59,680 --> 00:02:01,080
She had no hope of being rescued.

28
00:02:02,040 --> 00:02:04,100
Upon hearing his cries for help,

29
00:02:04,660 --> 00:02:07,440
Hutchinson located him and jumped into the water.

30
00:02:08,180 --> 00:02:09,720
Then she pulled him to safety

31
00:02:09,720 --> 00:02:13,620
using the life-saving techniques she had learned in swimming classes.

32
00:02:14,720 --> 00:02:16,900
Michaels, grateful for the rescue,

33
00:02:17,480 --> 00:02:19,120
thanked Hutchinson profusely

34
00:02:19,120 --> 00:02:22,840
and said he planned to start swimming lessons immediately.

35
00:02:23,920 --> 00:02:26,840
That's the latest news from World Broadcasting.

36
00:02:26,840 --> 00:02:29,100
Stay tuned for further developments.
