Cloud detection is one of the first steps in any optical remote sensing pipeline. If a cloud is missed, every value downstream is wrong. The difficult case is not the thick cumulus cloud. It is the thin cirrus, which lets most of the light through and looks almost like clear sky in the visible bands. To catch it, we look at the shortwave infrared, where water and ice absorb strongly.
